Quirky Coronation Street character, Julie Carp, is proving a big hit with older men, according to the actress who plays her.
Katy Cavanagh told the Daily Mirror newspaper that the endearingly ditsy, chatterbox seems to have a certain something that appeals to older men – judging by the number of men who have approached her to tell her how much they love the work.
“It’s really weird, but I always get men over the age of 40 coming up to me and saying: ‘I love Julie, I love Julie.’ Not the wives – it’s always the husbands who are fond of her,” the 38-year-old actress said. “I get lots of lorry drivers talking to me, too. And I get fan mail from men as well. I had a really lovely poem from a man who was slightly in love with Julie. He must have been over 60 and it was really nice.”
Cavanagh can’t pin-point what it is about Julie that seems to trip the fancy of older men, but she thinks the character’s wacky – but always well turned out – wardrobe may have something to do with it.
“And she’s always nicely turned out. Sometimes men like it when women make an effort and we don’t always make so much of an effort nowadays,” Cavanagh suggested.
Julie has been a familiar face on Coronation Street since 2008, when her larger-than-life and always cheerful character became one of the regular factory workers.
